The United Nations (UN) are a singular international organization to which 185 sovereign countries, including Germany since 1973, belong. It was created after World War II in order to develop world peace and international security; build solid, friendly relations between the nations; and encourage social progress in promoting a better standard of living and human rights. Therefore, it is an important objective of German foreign policy to further strengthen the role of the United Nations as the central action forum of the community of countries. The UNO Charter, a legal international contract, connects the member countries to one another by stating their rights and obligations as members of the international community.

Since their establishment, Germany has been a member and the driving force of the European Union.

The primary goal of this organization is to achieve a closer community between the European countries in which decisions are made to represent the citizens of the present 25 member countries as much as possible.

The present EU member countries include Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

In the course of its recent history, the European Union has changed not only geographically but also politically, with a strong shift in its institutional establishment. The articles of association founded in 1957 have been revised four times: in 1987 with the Uniform Document, 1992 with the Contract over the European Union, in 1997 with the Contract of Amsterdam and in 2003 with the Contract of Nice.
