 AFFILIATES OF THE GNTB

Berlin Airports

Berlin is Germany’s most visited city, one of Europe’s top 3 destinations, and home to one of the world’s leading trade fairs. Thus the German capital with its three airports Tegel (TXL), Schönefeld (SXF) und Tempelhof (THF) is becoming increasingly attractive for airlines. The 2005 summer schedule lists 90 airlines operating to 149 destinations in 51 countries. As measured by passenger figures in the first six months of 2005, Berlin ranks third among Germany’s most frequented airports. Berlin Airports are a profit-oriented enterprise of the service industry. In close cooperation with tour operators, airlines, transport companies and tourist organisations, the airports boost the expansion of transport connections to and from the greater Berlin region.

While TXL is the busiest airport with 11 million passengers, SXF offers 24-hour operation and low-cost routes which have turned it into one of Germany’s fastest-growing airports. In comparison with the previous year, passenger numbers in SXF almost doubled in 2004 (increase of 93 percent), around 5 million passengers are expected in 2005. THF, the historical airport of the famous Berlin airlift, is still in use and frequented mostly by smaller business jets and private aeroplanes.

The project to concentrate all air traffic at the new airport Berlin Brandenburg International (BBI) is well under way. BBI, located south of the existing SXF airport, is scheduled to open in 2011.

Cooperation agreements and partners
The ideal and also commercially practical linkage of private and public interests - the "private-public partnership" - has been the guiding principle behind the GNTB from the outset. In times of budget constraints and increasing competition, this partnership between the state and private enterprise is more important than ever. Cooperation agreements and the pooling of budgets are thus the way forward in the marketing of Germany as a travel destination.
