In 1793, Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I chose Bad Doberan as his summer residence and founded Heiligendamm , Germany's first sea-side resort. In this "white town by the sea", the most famous architects of their day created a unique architectural ensemble in the classical style, and today six buildings comprise a gem that really is worthy of the description "luxurious" – the Kempinski Grand Hotel Heiligendamm.
